Reasons why you are not losing weight

When you are losing weight your body fights back. Kevin Hall, a senior scientist at the national institute of health, conducted a study on 14 contestants of the reality show ‘The Biggest Loser’. And to his surprise, 13 of the 14 contestants gained almost 66% of their weight after the show ended.

According to him the reason they gained their weight back was that their resting metabolism slowed down when they lost weight. This is true for every other overweighed person. Turns out that it is not the lack of proper diet or motivation why some people tend to remain fat, but it is the biology of the body. The body will make it difficult for keeping the weight off in the long run.

Another research NWCR (National Weight Control Registry) suggested that people who tend to lose weight and keep it off, have not triumphed by following a specific diet, but by trying different things. They concluded that people lose weight in a different way. If a low carb diet worked for a person, it might not work for the other. In most of the cases, people try different diets to find out what works best for them.

A group of scientists is trying to understand how bacteria that live in the body and on the surface of the body can affect the metabolism.

A research was conducted in 2015 by Segal and Elinav, where 800 men and women were given devices to measure their blood sugar. And to their surprise, the rise in blood sugar levels was different in different people, even when they ate the same meal. This made it crystal clear that diets that claim weight loss might work for some, while it might not work for others.
But the research did give them some insight on how the microbiomes played a role in determining how their body responded when they had food.

Some speculate that it is in their genes to remain fat. But according to a study conducted on 9000 people, genes alone cannot be blamed for the rise in obesity. Genes might keep you a little heavier but will not keep you from losing weight.

Now, most people have been working on their diet and exercise to lose weight, not knowing the fact that lacking in diet and exercise is not the sole cause of obesity. According to a study conducted by Dr. Leonardo Trasande concluded that exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals can lead to different diseases like autism, adult obesity, childhood obesity, diabetes, infertility.
Chemicals have the ability to mimic like some hormones and can bind with the receptors and enzymes which will then interrupt with the functioning of the body.

When we are talking about reasons that keep you from losing weight, how can we not mention Stress? Stress has been considered to contribute widely to the development of obesity.

When we are under stress, the autonomic nervous system (ANS) is activated. The ANS governs functions like respiration, maintenance of blood pressure etc. When under stress, ANS suppresses the functions like digestion, growth etc which seems to be not so important for that moment of stress. But what you must understand is, stress can be a deciding factor when it comes to obesity.

And not just stress, but lack of sleep is also another reason why you are not seeing results. We need time and sleep to recover. A normal person needs almost 7-8 hours of sleep every day.

Now it’s not that you will lose weight if you sleep well, but if you do not get enough sleep, your body’s metabolism will gradually slow down or not function properly.

Truth about weight loss diets:

There are different types of diet available on the internet. Many claims that their diet and nutrition plan can get you the physique you dream of. They post some of their clients’ pictures on Instagram and some of us are easily lured by it. But only a few of us know what it takes to get the physique of our dreams or lose weight.

I am not saying that diet plans are not worth it. Diet plans are great. But like I’ve mentioned above, they work differently for different people. The diet plan that works the best for you might not work the best for your neighbor.

According to Hall (NIH Scientist), a highly personalized diet will work better than any other trendy diet.

If somebody promises you that their diet plan will definitely help you lose weight, stay away from that person. Unless the diet is personalized studying what works and what doesn’t work for you.
There are different diet plans like the keto diet, the atkins diet, paleo diet that you might want to try. Give it a try, but if you don’t make any noticeable progress, don’t be demotivated. Rather try something else. Everybody who has lost weight has done it after a series of trial and errors.

Treat your body with respect and attain the goals you dream of.

Feed it rubbish and you’ll never see the results. Fuel the body with right nutrition making some tweaks that work the best for you and watch it lose weight and gain muscles over time.

I have a dedicated post on how to do a keto diet. Feel free to check it out.

Truth about weight loss supplements and drinks

If we look at the numbers we can comprehend that almost 35% of the Americans are obese, almost 60% of the Canadians are overweighted, and these are not mere numbers. This shows how many of us are at the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, and other cardiovascular diseases.

Now when it comes to weight loss products like green tea and black coffee etc, most of us have this misperception that if it is natural it is safe and is definitely going to help us lose weight without any doubt. Sorry! it won’t.

Talking about green tea, we know how much beneficial it is. Green tea contains polyphenols which act as antioxidants. Antioxidants can save our cells from damage caused by reactive oxygen species. And not just reactive species, antioxidants also protect us from damage caused by UV radiations.

Green tea has been found to lower urinary levels of 8-OHdG (8-hydorxydeoxyguanosine), which is a marker of increased cancer risk. However, it is not clear if lower levels of 8-OHdG are associated with reduced cancer risk.

According to the National Cancer Institute, it is inconclusive that green tea can reduce cancer risk.

But is it really effective for losing weight?

As far as weight loss is concerned, the ability of green tea to act as a weight loss agent is insignificant. And this is backed by many studies, including one conducted by Tannis Jurgens where they found that green tea has no significant role in maintaining weight after weight loss.

Weight loss tips and exercises

Well, knowing how insignificant weight loss drinks and diet can be for some, people might start losing hope. But what if I say that even if you are not so good when it comes to calorie tracking and all the stuff when it comes to dieting, it is possible to lose weight.

Well if I did it, you can do it too.

Let’s talk about the secret weapon I would like you all to use if nothing else seems to work for you. Even if you are not one of those who is not overweight but has reached his plateau this might be of some help.

Now I am assuming that you already know that if you need to lose weight you’ll need to build muscles, decrease your calorie intake.

Keeping that in mind, my approach to losing weight was simple. I used strength training, HIIT and intermediate training.

Why Strength training?

When we apply resistance to our muscles, it causes little micro-tears in the muscles. These then get repaired by growing stronger and bigger. And this is called hypertrophy.

So the more muscles we have in the body, the more calories we burn. Muscles help burn more calories. So from a fat loss point of view, strength training can be effective in losing weight.

I usually do compound exercises and I love to go heavy.

But the secret I used to burn more calories was that I used to do whole body workouts twice a week. When you do whole body workouts without skipping exercises, these can be pure torture, but you’ll lose more weight doing these.

Injury prevention: It can be really frustrating to not be able to workout even when you want to because of muscle injury. As a result, you have to sit down and watch your gains go down the drain.   I have learned over time how we can minimize the risk of injuries.

You need to focus on these things if you are to avoid injuries.

1 Do warm-ups before jumping into a strength training workout session.

2 Stop ego lifting. Now there is a difference between lifting heavy and ego lifting. We should go for weights with which we can perform a full range of motion. There is no benefit of going heavy and not performing a complete range of motion. If you do ego lifting without a complete range of motion, the only person you are cheating is yourself.

3 Stop lifting with bad form. I see a lot of people in the gym lifting with bad form. The only thing they get is an injury. Now, this may be because they are new or they have a really bad trainer. But good posture is no rocket science and anybody can learn it by watching some videos on the internet. I personally love Jeff Cavaliere when it comes to learning good posture. The man is just too good.
