You have been told that to build or maintain muscles you need to consume 0.82-1.00gms of protein per pound or per gram of your body weight.

For some, as it was for me when I was starting, this is a whole lot of protein to consume. So, people make a big mistake by cheating and opting for shakes and bars over eating real food. Shakes and bars are good if you are not able to take meals with you, but should be avoided otherwise.

Why is Dietary Supplements not a good choice?

Supplements are a great choice when you are in a hurry, or you are somewhere out where you cannot find some healthy food. But otherwise, it won’t be wise to consume supplements. Shakes and protein bars are processed, and so they come with ingredients which might not be very healthy, like sugar and preservatives. People these days choose supplements as an alternative way of maintaining good health. And today with the increase in the number of supplement companies, the quality of shakes and bars have been improved. But I’d always suggest going with a brand that has been around for a long time and whose products are clinically tested.

IS REAL FOOD THE BEST OPTION?

Our food contains not just the macros but it also contains micronutrients like vitamins and minerals that are as essential as the micro’s themselves. Food not only contains nutrients but is a better alternative for supplements because it will keep your stomach full for a longer time. So, if you consume real food, you will not be hungry over and over again in a short span of time. Other than that, when you consume some shake or bar you get only some isolated vitamins or minerals, but when you take some real food you get hundreds of vitamins and nutrients from the natural source. Multivitamin supplements are a good cheap alternative for the vitamins obtained from food but they lack the fibre which is important for the digestion of food.
